History of Veterans Memorial Park

On August 2, 1955, Veterans Memorial Park opened for business under the Veterans Memorial Trust Association. The chief purpose was to provide a field of honour for veterans and their immediate family members. The first burial took place in March 1959.

Soon the landmark that remains to this day was erected, a 65-foot military cross with two Howitzer guns placed on either side of the cross. Later, as the cemetery became public, the two guns were donated to the city of White Rock and the Vancouver Armoury.

The cemetery was originally divided into four gardens, including The Rose Garden, or Thousand Flowers, for scattering.

On May 15, 1973 five local respected funeral directors, one of whom was Ray Loewen, purchased the cemetery and renamed it Victory Memorial Park. A crematorium was built in 1974 to service the needs of the lower mainland. In 1984 Victory Memorial Park Cemetery became part of the Loewen Group chain of funeral homes and cemeteries. The legal name became Southside Memorial Services and Crematorium Ltd.

Between 1984 and the present, many improvements have been added: Memory Glen, the first cremation garden, was constructed with a large pond and a rectangular niche wall; sections were opened for Beth Tikvah Jewish Congregation from Richmond, St. Vartan’s Armenian Church, the Canadian Hussaini Association and the BC Muslim Association; double-depth lawn crypts were constructed; a cremation garden called Brookside was added in the natural setting behind Memory Glen with streams, ponds and two rectangular niches; plots for both full and cremation burial were created in Terry Winter (in Honour of Dr. Terry Winter), Mountain View Gardens, Glenhaven Gardens, Cascade Gardens, Plateau of Eternal Peace and Harmony Garden; nine niche walls were constructed, including Memory Glen, Thousand Flowers and Brookside; and private and bench estates, called Victory Gardens, were added.

In October 1996 Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre was opened.

On January 2, 2002, Loewen Group was renamed Alderwoods and, in 2007, became a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers.
